Unlike later directories, Gray’s 1853 lists streets in groups by area
rather than in alphabetical order. Some streets at this date were only
numbered on one side, and so buildings on the unnumbered side are listed
just after the numbered property on the other side of the road, and marked
with an asterisk to indicate they’re on the opposite side.
The modern London Road is divided into sections here: the southernmost
section is called London Road, the next one northwards is called Broad
Green, and the one after that is called Thornton Heath.
