The Past and Present of Croydon's London Road

Last Will and Testament of Joshua Stopford of Croydon, clerk (National Archives reference: PROB 11/1220/187)

The will of Joshua Stopford of Croydon, clerk, was made on 8 May 1792 and proved on 27 June 1792. The executor was his sister, Margaret Stopford of Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire. According to the probate register copy, Joshua left:

  • £30 to Elizabeth Gibson “who now resides with me”, on condition that she was still living with him at the time of his death.
  • Everything else to Margaret.

Below is my transcription of the probate register copy of the will. Bold and italic formatting reflect the different writing styles used in the document, and I have added paragraph breaks to make it easier to read.
